Echos Coiffure: No:82 Nov-Dec 2020 Cover. In three hair tutorials Nicolas Jurnjack revisits the iconic looks of past centuries where the beauties of legends spent days devoted to their beauty with the sole aim of being unique. Could they be the ancestors of our current influencers?
Echos Coiffure: Haute Couture Hairstyle Tutorial Nicolas Jurnjack. A collection of Haute Couture styles inspired by impressionists and poster artists, illustrators and graphic designers of the 19th century like Georges de Feure and d'Alfons Mucha.

– une mousse pour épaissir les cheveux, puis j’ai gardé la ligne du contour de visage libre ;
– un crêpage fort de toute la matière pour accrocher les rajouts de toutes les longueurs. L’utilisation de colle ou adhésif est bien entendu interdite sur les VIP ;

Nicolas Jurnjack is an integral part of the fashion industry for more than 30 years. His life is one crazy roller-coaster of success, hard work, dedication, and passion. His work was published in magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and he has shot with the world’s famous photographers, models, and celebrities. Six black and white portraits styled by Nicolas were even exposed at International Fashion Photography Exhibition at Louvre Museum. In the 1990s and early 2000s, he worked with some of the biggest creative forces in fashion such as Alexender McQueen, Galiano, and Gaultier to name a few. Along with them, he created some of the most stunning and iconic runway looks and marked a golden era of fashion. Passion for his profession, craft, and creativity led him to write a book called In the Hair. A fashion hair stylist’s journey of creativity which is a must not only for hair stylists, but for every creative and fashion-loving soul out there. In December 2019, he launched masterclasses and seminars to share his knowledge and equip a younger generation of hair stylists with skills to chase their dreams in the hair industry.

5-Eleven Magazine. Point of View. Interview with Nicolas Jurnjack Hairstylist words by Abra Kennedy. Q. Where is the future of fashion going? NJ: To talk about the future, we have to talk about the present first. Q: How did you get into the [hairstyling] club? It all happened by pure luck. My devotion, my love but also my naivety kept me going … One day in 1991 I was living in a tiny room underneath a rooftop. The concierge came all the way up saying I had a phone call. I went downstairs, I took the phone and the woman said she was from Vogue Paris, she needed someone to do the hair for an Haute Couture story …

INTERVIEW.

Silence, on shoote !

“For me, hair is the major material through which I express myself.” Nicolas Jurnjack Paris, France
What is next for your career goals?
Education, transmission of technique. Hairdressing is both a craft and a profession, it has so many technical challenges and so much room for innovation. Confidence is key and confidence comes from skill and knowledge – expertise frees you to create and innovate. A few weeks ago I started ATELIERS NICOLAS JURNJACK to share my knowledge and experience of studio techniques—and my passion.
I am pleased to introduce to our Iles Formula Hair Talk segment, hair maestro Nicolas Jurnjack. Nicolas is by far one of the most exquisite hair technicians I have ever witnessed with hair. When I first arrived in Paris some 20 years ago I had the privilege to work alongside Nicolas on some of most prestige defiles, Dior, McQueen, Chanel, Galliano to name a few. His hair creations were written about for weeks after the defiles had passed. He is a maestro with hair, watching him work is hypnotic and stimulating and it’s evident that this French gentleman absolutely breathes hair.
Do read his book that has just been released, inspiring in every way.
Do you see your sensibility as the secret to your success? One can only speak of perfection when perfect technique and perfect sensibility become one. Perfection means having great technique but being unconscious of it and allowing oneself to be guided by a feeling. If you only have technique, you only prove one thing - you can do crazy stuff with hair.
- Today, Nicolas is working towards creating a training course in hairdressing, following the example of what Thierry Marx did for cooking [offering theoretical and practical knowledge for real conditions.] Nicolas Jurnjack par Laure-Emmanuelle Bonilla.

Interview | Inspiration by Eve Laborderie: “ Ce métier m’a sauvé ma vie” .
Known for his bold and sculptural approach to his craft, Nicolas Jurnjack is one of the world’s leading hair artists. Immersed in all aspects of the fashion and beauty industry, he has created runway looks for Alexander McQueen, Jean-Paul Gaultier and John Galliano, and contributed to editorials and advertising campaigns shot by photography heavyweights such as Mario Sorrenti, Paolo Roversi and Patrick Demarchelier. In early 2017 he released his first book In The Hair.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE A TYPICAL WEEK IN YOUR LIFE?
As a hairstylist in the fashion and beauty industry there is no “typical”. My time is divided into super busy stretches and relaxation time. The crazy, busy stretches are all airports and taxis. Hairstyling my way through different time zones, in studios, on a busy street, in beautiful parks, half way up a canyon, or surrounded by animals who would be more at home on an from African Savannah but are part of the shoot! Different models, teams, clients, stories and always different hairstyles.
My busy days are consistent in one way alone. I prepare my kit(s), everything organized including packing extra’s for at least three dramatically different looks that have not been requested – from experience I know that on the day these may well be called for. I rarely go out if my schedule is back to back. After everything is prepared and in an effort to combat jet-lag or at least soften its blows especially if I am in a time-zone where my night is now day I watch nature documentaries or old black and white French comedies to unwind and relax. When I am not working I go to Yoga classes, it’s a welcome respite from being up in the air, flying from job to job. I have been practicing Yoga for years. I like cooking so I take the time to prepare my favorite meals, catch up with friends and take longs walks.

NJ: In 1994 I was selected to present six original hairstyles at the Louvre, which was going to be on display for two months. I was in my twenties at that time and it was a dream come true! I was so nervous and excited at the same time because it was bigger than anything I’d ever done before you know, like for magazines. The audience was going to be bigger and not just restricted to fashion aficionados. I started to panic. So I went to the Louvre and found myself wandering from gallery to gallery, waiting for inspiration to hit me. But somehow I couldn’t relax, the place was crowded and I still got nothing! I told myself to forget everything I’d learnt so far and start from scratch and create something memorable. And eureka! The word ‘organic’ dawned upon me. I decided to come up with a hairstyle made entirely out of paper. Which turned out to be quite challenging – the technique used would have to ensure that the hairstyle would come to life and not fall apart.
Among the greatest French hairdressers there is a visionary with golden fingers.
What is the genius of Nicolas Jurnjack? His phlegm undoubtedly, and his way of handling impertinence to translate on the podiums and in the pages of magazines, the inspiration of the greatest stylists as if it were obvious. To shake the codes of the hairstyle, to renew itself to infinity is a subtle exercise ...

Writer: Mamen Infante
Seven gurus of beauty in the digital age
What Nicolas Jurnjack does: He is the wizard of the brushes, nobody styles like him. He is an artist with hair.
How he got there: At age 16 he left school with no vocation in sight and began working as an apprentice hairdresser, at first it held zero attraction for him, but it became a profession that would change his life. It happened one day in a salon near the beach in Marseilles, France, a fashion magazine team entered the hair salon asking for help on a photo shoot, the booked hairstylist had failed to show up. He volunteered (aged 16) and something clicked in his head: this could work. He moved to Paris without contacts or plans. He visited a thousand agencies and got one to represent him. He did little work until one day fate brought him Vogue, due to a shooting schedule change and none of the usual hairdressers were available. Someone called him and the work he did ended up being recognized. For ten years he was practicing at home without feeling sufficiently prepared, although he did not stop working in productions and at runway shows. His first big show was in 1997, with Alexander McQueen. Thereafter Givenchy, Galliano, Gaultier, Albaz, Ricci, Kenzo, Jeremy Scott and more followed. His 30 years in theprofession is an endorsement of the quality and level of his work, which can be seen in the best magazines in the world.
His signature: There are no limits to his creativity, he is an authentic craftsman. He seeks to surprise and he achieves it. He sometimes uses different materials to to achieve incredible effects and volumes such as wood, spray paint, branches, foliage, metal, paper, wool.
Milestones: His work has won many awards and was even exhibited at the Louvre Museum in Paris.

Alexander McQueen's1997 show It's A Jungle Out There caused a sensation. In an exclusive extract from her new book, Dana Thomas, relives the drama, the divas and the extraodinary clothes. McQueen asked Nicolas Jurnjack to do the hair. "We met in his showroom, and it was only him, alone, and he showed me animal skins - fox, yak - and said, 'Make me something sick,'" Jurnjack says. "He talked about all that is animalistic: the lion, the boar, the hyena. Everyone had teeth. It was aggressive."

CLIP ART - Editorial stylist Nicolas Jurnjack fulfills his long-standing dream of turning hair clippings from the salon floor into art with the looks on these pages. While on a trip to Los Angeles 6 months ago, Nicolas Jurnjack found himself sitting in a mall watching the windows of a salon. What he saw was a stylist frenetically cutting a female client’s long hair. The hair was flying! It reminded me of when I was an assistant in a hair shop, I was always looking at all that hair falling on the floor and thinking one day I should do something with that. I would put my hands inside and feel it – it’s very soft, like angel hair, he says.
It's pretty safe – for design, for advertising – to play the 50s card, says French hairstylist Nicolas Jurnjack, who created the styles of these pages. "It's not the 70s, with pop art and patchwork color; it's not the 80s. with glitter and stuff like that. The 50s [style] is quiet, chic looks, It's very, very nice fashion." By Carrie Hutchinson

Matrix: ”4a.m. hair” says it all … but can you add a few words? Nicolas Jurnjack: It’s wavy, dewy, mussed, topsy-turvy, teased, textured, exaggerated, unfinished and uncontrived.
